Belgic Confession, Article 03: The Written Word of God
This excerpt from Article 3 of the Belgic Confession establishes the Reformed doctrine of Scripture's divine origin and authority, emphasizing that God's Word was delivered through the Holy Spirit's inspiration of the prophets and apostles, then committed to writing under God's special care. The article grounds the authority of written Scripture in God's direct involvement, providing a foundational confessional statement on the nature and reliability of the Bible for Reformed theology and practice.
Article 3: The Written Word of God We confess that this Word of God was not sent nor delivered “by human will,” but that “men and women moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God,”as Peter says.1Afterward our God—with special care for us and our salvation—commanded his servants, the prophets and apostles, to commit this revealed Word to writing. God, with his own finger, wrote the two tables of the law. Therefore we call such writings holy and divine Scriptures.12 Pet. 1:21
