Belgic Confession, Article 01: The Only God

Read Full Text on Original Source

Article 1 of the Belgic Confession presents the foundational doctrine of God's nature and attributes, affirming belief in one eternal, incomprehensible, and almighty God. This excerpt establishes the theological foundation for Reformed doctrine by confessing God as a single spiritual being who is completely wise, just, good, and the source of all goodness. As a key article from this sixteenth-century Reformed confessional document, it remains essential for understanding classical Protestant Reformed theology.

Article 1: The Only God We all believe in our hearts and confess with our mouths that there is a single and simple spiritual being, whom we call God—eternal, incomprehensible, invisible, unchangeable, infinite, almighty; completely wise, just, and good, and the overflowing sourceof all good.
