Marriages and mercy
This article uses the literary form of a biblical lament to address the deterioration of Christian marriages, presenting a realistic narrative of a couple whose relationship has grown cold and painful despite outward church participation. Laning emphasizes the need for mercy, forgiveness, and sincere repentance in marriage relationships, calling the Christian community to help couples work through conflict and restore their bonds. The piece combines pastoral concern with biblical reflection to address a significant problem in Christian families and communities.
(The following paragraph is a modern lament I call, How. Traditional Hebrew laments, such as Lamentations, began their text using the word "How" -- see Lamentations 1:1, 2:1, and Lamentations 4:1. Thus, the title of Lamentations is Ekah, "How.") How did this marriage turn so cold when, once upon a time, it was beautiful and loving?
