When discipline “descends into butchery”
Prof. Barry Gritters addresses the proper exercise of Christian discipline in the church, warning against both extremes of leniency and undue severity. Drawing on Calvin's insights and church history, he emphasizes that biblical discipline must balance God's grace and mercy with His holiness and justice, always aiming at the restoration of the sinner while maintaining church purity and God's glory.
There are two maxims I try to emphasize in seminary and my students will not be surprised when I repeat them here: "Avoid extremes" (keep your balance!) and "remember history."
