The Winter, Which Thou Hast Made
Of Nova Zembla Tollens* sings: "Here the Prince of Winter has erected his throne." Yet at heart this is ungodly and fundamentally heathen speech, as though there were a Prince of winter, who brings ice and snow and hoarfrost. A language that contrasts strongly with what in Israel a David and an Asaph sang: Our God gives snow like wool, he scattereth the hoarfrost like ashes, he casteth forth his ice like morsels: who can stand before his cold?" (Ps. 147:16, 17). This is the language of piety....
