Preface to the Canons
This is the historical preface to the Canons of Dort (1619), which provides theological and historical context for the synod's work against Arminianism. The preface emphasizes Christ's protective presence with His church throughout history and the role of civil magistrates and ecclesiastical synods in defending the faith against heresy and false doctrine. Though not an official part of the Canons themselves, this preface offers valuable insight into the Reformed perspective on God's providence and the church's relationship to secular authority.
The synod approved the canons on April 23, 1619, and two days later adopted a preface to the canons as a brief historical and theological introduction to the work of the synod and the canons. This preface has seldom been reprinted and is not regarded as an official part of the canons.
