From June 2 to 6, in the year of our Lord 2025, the Protestant Reformed Churches in America (PRCA) gathered to celebrate a remarkable milestone, the 100th anniversary of the denomination. The chosen theme, “Saved by Grace,” reflected the heartfelt desire that this celebration not draw attention to the denomination's longevity or accomplishments, but to God alone. It is God’s grace, or unmerited favor, that has sustained His truth among the PRCA for a century.
With gratitude the authors echo the words Gertrude Hoeksema penned when the churches marked their 50th anniversary in 1975, that the past century “has been a period of enrichment with grace unto grace, for our covenant Jehovah has instructed us through the preaching of the Word, has preserved us in the truth, and blessed us with every spiritual blessing far beyond our fondest imagination.” With her they also affirm that “our history has not been without its problems and struggles.” Those problems and struggles are painful and the source of much sorrow. Yet, God is not faithless, and so their confidence rests in Him and not themselves. Regardless of the age, members of the PRCA declare with Guido de Brès in Belgic Confession article 27, that “his holy church is preserved and supported by God, against the rage of the whole world, though she sometimes (for a while) appears very small.”
This book commemorates the denomination's centennial celebration, gathering together articles and photographs that reflect upon its history, doctrine, and life together.
Section 1 recounts the overall history of the denomination and includes pieces on societies, missions, outreach, previous celebrations, and statistical highlights.
Section 2 features articles from each congregation, describing its unique history and character.
Section 3 contains contributions from the PRCA's parental Christian schools and the Protestant Reformed Theological Seminary.
Section 4 explores the denomination's doctrinal heritage, addressing the major controversies that have shaped it and the truths that continue to define its witness today.
Section 5 offers a record of the centennial celebration itself and concludes with a message to the churches.
Interwoven throughout are letters of encouragement written by older saints, that “cloud of witnesses,” who offer counsel and hope to the next generation.
The authors gratefully acknowledge all who labored to organize the celebration and those whose writing fills these pages. May this book deepen the readers' understanding of the churches God has graciously preserved, the means through which He continues His work, and the gospel of sovereign grace that remains the PRCA's only hope and joy.
