The expression "in the flesh" need not necessarily mean the sinful flesh. Because the flesh is often referred to in God's Word where emphasis falls on our mere earthly existence. So Paul could speak even of a knowledge of Christ after the flesh. For Christ partook of our flesh and dwelled in the flesh. The flesh means therefore, first of all our merely earthly existence.
