David Engelsma critiques dispensational premillennialism as fundamentally incompatible with Reformed theology and biblical interpretation, drawing on Abraham Kuyper's arguments that all Old Testament prophecies concerning Israel and Jerusalem must be understood as fulfilled in the spiritual reality of the church in Christ. This opening chapter establishes the theological and historical case for why Reformed Christians should reject premillennial doctrine in favor of amillennial or postmillennial interpretations of Revelation 20 and eschatological prophecy.
