Den Hartog addresses the biblical discipline and instruction of covenant children, emphasizing parents' responsibility to apply God's Word to child-rearing in light of contemporary societal problems such as lawlessness, juvenile delinquency, and moral decay. The article traces many social failures to permissive parenting and broken homes, calling parents to make personal sacrifices for proper discipline and formation of their children according to Scripture. This opening piece introduces a series examining how covenant parents must continually return to biblical principles for nurturing the next generation.

It is my intention to write a few articles on the above mentioned theme. Many over the years have written on this subject. In preparation for writing these articles I am reading again some good articles and books from my library. God's Word has much to say about this subject. Our hope and prayer is that another study of this subject will not be considered unnecessary repetition and that we will not imagine that we already know all we need to know.
