This article by Professor Douglas Kuiper concludes a series on the biblical and confessional basis for the work of church elders, focusing on three main aspects: oversight, shepherding, and teaching. Kuiper provides an overview of the elder's responsibilities in overseeing worship (including preaching and sacraments), the work of other officebearers, and the congregation, while briefly introducing the remaining aspects of shepherding and teaching he intended to develop further.
Previous article in this series: February 1, 2022, p. 208. With this article I conclude, prematurely, my treatment of the work of elders. The conclusion is premature because I have not finished developing the topic thoroughly. However, in the interest of focusing my research and writing on topics that relate to my seminary coursework, I lay down the writing of this rubric. This last article will be a brief overview of those aspects of the work of the elders that I have not yet treated....
