A Summer of Violence A Summer of Violence For many cities in the United States, the summer was long and hot. Looting, hatred, arson, sniping, and death were the order of the day. Negroes rose in ghetto after ghetto to challenge police and armed troops sent in to restore order. Perhaps the worst of the rioting occurred in Newark and Detroit where at least 68 people were killed, thousands injured and property damage rose to nearly one-half billion dollars.
