Reverend Cornelius Hanko was the son of Herman and Jennie Hanko. His parents were born in the Netherlands. His father was a member of the State Church (Hervormde Kerk) and his mother was a member of the Secession (Afscheiding) of 1834. As a painter, Mr. Hanko provided for the needs of his family. The youngest of eight children, Rev. Hanko was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on Pentecost Sunday, May 19, 1907.
