Anna put on an apron—just like mother—and helped to set out the ingredients: flour, sugar, shortening, salt and milk. Anna knew where to find them all. Mother began to measure them out into a large bowl. “Anna, did you wash your hands?” She nodded. “Then let’s mix it all together.” With a sturdy wooden spoon, Anna began to stir all the things in the bowl.
