In April, 1608, Wtenbogaert asked for a Synod to settle the difficulties. The States of Holland agreed to an appeal of Arminius that he and Gomarus debate before the Supreme Court in the Hague. Representatives of the South Holland Synod asked that instead of a conference under court supervision, a conference should be held under the supervision of a Provincial Synod because it was a religious question which was at issue.
