Reformation Issue: Augustine
This journal article examines Augustine's foundational influence on the 16th century Protestant Reformation, arguing that Augustine's theology of sin and grace was the most formative patristic source for the Reformers like Calvin and Luther. The article introduces a special issue exploring various aspects of Augustine's teaching that shaped Reformation theology and continue to inform Reformed doctrine today.
Although it might seem a bit strange, at first blush, to devote the annual Reformation issue to a church father who died almost 1100 years before the great sixteenth century Reformation, we have good grounds for doing so.
