Rev. Ronald Hanko provides an introductory exegetical study of the book of Habakkuk, examining the prophet's identity, historical context during the Babylonian invasion, and the significance of his name. This article establishes foundational interpretive frameworks for understanding Habakkuk's prophecy and its message of faith, beginning a series of biblical exposition in the Reformed tradition.

The burden which Habakkuk the prophet did see. Habakkuk 1:1 Who was Habakkuk? He is mentioned twice in the book as the author (1:1; 3:1) and in both cases is called "the prophet" indicating that he was a prophet for life, unlike Amos, who was a herdsman called to bring the Word of God. Habakkuk 3:1 and 19 suggest the possibility that he was also a Levite and among the temple musicians. The reference to Shigionoth in 3:1 seems similar to the word "Shiggaion" in the heading of Psalm 7, though...
