The Levites were taken for the ministry of the sanctuary in place of the firstborn of Israel. Spake the Lord to Moses, "And I, behold, I have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel instead of the firstborn that openeth the matrix among the children of Israel: therefore the Levites shall be mine" (Num. 3:12).
