But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the Lord exceedingly. The conjunction but car­ries us back to the preceding verse which reads, "And Abraham dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom". When Abraham, in response to the voice of Heaven, set out for Canaan, he was joined by his nephew Lot, who continued with him on the journey to Egypt and back again to Bethel.
