A banner was very important to soldiers involved in hand-to-hand combat. The banner was a flag placed upon a tall pole and held above the leader of the army. The soldiers had a vital interest in seeing the banner, for it served as their rallying point. They would look for the banner and then gather around it, and thus around their leader.
